RIO CELESTE

The Enchanted River with Sky Blue Waters

The Río Celeste, located in Tenorio Volcano National Park in northern Costa Rica, is one of the country’s most enchanting natural treasures. This river is named for the intense sky-blue color of its waters, which seems almost unreal. According to local legend, when God painted the sky, he rinsed his brushes in this river, giving it this magical hue. In reality, this phenomenon is caused by a natural chemical reaction between minerals in the water, primarily sulfur and calcium carbonate.

Nestled in a lush tropical rainforest, Río Celeste boasts rich biodiversity. The hike to the river is an adventure in itself. The main trail, approximately 7 kilometers round trip, winds through dense jungle, allowing visitors to observe diverse wildlife and plant life. Along the way, one might spot howler monkeys, toucans, coatis, and even sloths if lucky.

One of the main attractions of this site is the spectacular Río Celeste waterfall. This waterfall, about 30 meters high, plunges into a natural pool of bright blue water, surrounded by tropical vegetation. It’s the perfect spot for unforgettable photos. Although swimming is prohibited to preserve this fragile ecosystem, the area invites contemplation and admiration of nature’s raw beauty.

Río Celeste is undoubtedly one of Costa Rica’s natural wonders. Whether to admire its spectacular waterfall, understand the chemical phenomenon of the Teñideros, or lose oneself in the lush nature of Tenorio Volcano National Park, this destination offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers. This enchanting place combines mystery, beauty, and science in a serene and preserved setting.
